Character Animation For Animation

Shape Language. In this 1st week we will breakdown the relationship between shape and character design. We will focus on building our designs from simple shapes and discuss in detail how shapes can affect our character designs.

Character Design Silhouettes. In this 2nd week we will discuss the importance of character silhouettes and how clear silhouettes in design and posing can help shape and strengthen our characters.

Character Design Line Ups. In this 3rd week we will detail out how designing unique character shapes and silhouettes are important to creating strong and diverse character line ups.

Character Faces. In this 4th week we will explore how to bring an individual identity to a character’s face through design and personality.

Character Story Moment. In this 5th week we will be designing 2 contrasting characters and placing them in a story telling moment.

Matching a unique design style. In this 6th week we will explore the reality that as a designer, every project you will work on will have a style linked to the way it’s designed. It’s our job as designers to be adaptable and flexible enough to design in whatever style we are asked to design.

Designing animals as characters. In this 7th week we will be focusing on the common task of designing animals as characters for animation.

Character Turn Around. Our final 8th week of lectures will help us transition into what we will be covering in my next course: Character Design for Production. We will breakdown the importance of creating a character turn around. What a character turn around is, why it is an important skill for all character designers to poses, and how it is applied in a professional production.
